Optimize your website for Search Engines


Getting visibility to your website is largely based on inbound links i.e other websites should contain links that point to your website. If you are a new website owner, this process could take time. As a start, for visibility, you can have your website introduced to Google and Bing. Read on to know how.


Get your site verified with Google

  1. Sign in to Google Webmaster Tools with your Google account. If you do not have an account, you need to create one.
  2. Click "Add a site", enter the domain name of your site in the box that pops up, then click "Continue."
  3. Your will be taken to another page. On that page, click the click the alternative method tab and select the radio button labeled as HTML tag.
  4. Copy the meta tag (for example,<meta name="google-site-verification"content="-CrQ_DrWlnmxXAAUWPbBMs3XnqzCi9yOA8DV66UuTsk" /> ) from the Instruction box.
  5. In a new browser window or tab, sign in to sites.zoho.com. On your site, navigate to Manage >> Settings >> SEO >> Google Tools.
  6. Paste the meta tag that you copied, in the text box labeled as Meta Tag under the heading Google Analytics and Webmaster Tools.
  7. Click "Save". Publish your site now.
  8. Go back to the Webmaster Tools page where you copied the meta tag and click "Verify". Your site will now get verified.

     





Get your site verified with Bing


  1. Visit http://www.bing.com/toolbox/webmaster/ and Sign In. If you do not have an account, you need to create one.
  2. Click "Add your Site", fill in all the required details on the following page and click Save.
  3. On the following page, copy the meta tag given under Option 2 - "Copy and paste a <meta> tag in your default webpage"
  4. Login to Zoho Sites, go to Manage > Settings > Bing WebMaster to paste the meta tag
  5. Save the changes and re-publish your website.
  6. Go back to the same page on Bing from where you copied the meta-tag and click Verify.


Define meta tags for your site

Search engines read meta tags in order to compare them with the content on your website. It is important to search engines to find a relation with the title, description and keywords to the visible content on your site.  Read on to know what you must include in the meta tags.

Title

The title concisely and accurately describes the topic and theme of an online document. The title tag is an HTML element that calls attention to both SEO and user experience. Why are title tags important? Because, they are displayed on the top bar of internet browsers and in search engine results. An optimized and enticing title tag can increase click-through rates and greater brand awareness.

Description

The summary of your website can be put in to the meta description tag. Essentially, it must tell search engines and internet users what your site is about and what you offer. Optimizing the length of your description is also important as search engines only read up to a certain number of words.
 

Keywords

Put all the keywords used on your site in to the Keyword meta tag. When you create a website, you want to include keywords on your site that will take you to the top of search engine rankings. As the name suggests, keywords are the essential terms used to describe your website — users must be able to pick up  what your website is about by reading your keywords.

Communicate with web crawlers using robots.txt


What is robots.txt?
"Robots" crawl websites so that authority sites such as Google, Yahoo or Bing can "index" the pages in their database servers. If, in certain cases, you do not want your pages to be indexed, use robots.txt to exclude your pages from being indexed. By default, all pages will be indexed and will appear on search results. To prevent pages from showing up on search, you need to add those pages to the Robots.txt file.

301 Redirect 

This command is an efficient and search engine friendly method to redirect web pages. For instance, if you have to transfer contents of a page to a new URL, it is safe to implement the 301 Redirect on that page to direct users to the new URL. The 301 status code means that a page has permanently moved to a new location.
 
To add a 301 Redirect, login to your website builder, select 'Manage', then 'Settings' and click on 301 Redirect and follow on-screen instructions there.



Adding Alt Text to images


Alt text, also known as Alternative Text or Alt Tag is used to describe an image in a webpage. Search engines use Alt Tags to understand what an image represents. Users can add Alternate Text for images while uploading images to their webpage using the 'Image' element. Drag-n-drop the Image element to the content area of your webpage, and in the Image Upload window that pops-up, you will find the option to add Alt Text for that image.



Naming image files


Before you upload your images with some default file name, it is recommended to rename the image file with something that actually describes the image. Also, if the file name is more than just one word, use a - (hyphen) instead of an _ (underscore) to separate the words. For example, lets say you would like to upload an image of a red Ferrari to your website that you have captured using a camera. Rather than simply uploading the file as dcmimage12.jpg or any other default file name, rename it to something like red-ferrari.jpg, so that search engines know that the image you are uploading is related to a red Ferrari.
